I stumbled upon these incredibly life-like bronze sculptures of waiting passengers, on the platform at Brixton Station. It really caught my attention and I knew instinctively, that I had to find out more about them. There were no plaques or any information around to explain the concept behind the sculptures. So I did some research and found an artist named Kevin Atherton, made the sculptures. It was commissioned by British Rail and was installed in 1986. He used three volunteers for the project namely Peter Lloyd, Joy Battick and Karin Heistermann. I only saw two of the sculptures as the third one was on an abandoned platform. I even stumbled upon a 'Brixton blog' written by Max MacBride, which gave the historical background of the project and showed some behind the scene pictures of the sculpting process. The blog even showed real pictures of the artist and volunteers. You can view the blog here: http://www.brixtonblog.com/the-never-ending-commute-the-story-of-brixtons-station-statues/14281
I just love discovering art in hidden or open spaces!
